Welcome – and thanks for stopping by.

I’ve learned, taught and written about science, environment, genealogy and history for organizations, newspapers, magazines, reference books, online publication and business clients. I remain interested in all sorts of things… but I keep coming back to history. For this newest iteration of the website, American History will be the theme, and we’ll see how it goes.

If you were curious, the site title, A Distant Mirror, is an homage to Barbara W. Tuchman (1912-1989), historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author. Her 1978 book, A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century, left an indelible impression on my younger self. In 1984, her March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam (1984), which examined the “recurring pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests” (from the flyleaf) – cemented my respect for the practice of history and the valuable perspective it can provide to policy makers and citizens living right now.

Everyone is invited to add comments to articles, or to send an email to me at cmroane @ cool-universe.com if you’d prefer.

Warm wishes,

Christine Roane
